·                  John F. Kennedy High School’s mission is to develop our island students to become globally-primed high achievers.

ATTENTION STUDENTS: 

·             The 2010 JFK Yearbook is on sale for $60Students and faculty are encouraged to order this JFK keepsake.  Buy now, and avoid the rush! 

·             3rd quarter Athletes:  It is mandatory to submit completed attendance checks the day of your game, or the day before if your game falls on Saturday.  Also, bi-weekly progress reports must be submitted.  See any of the Facility Planning students in H102 during break, lunch, or 15 minutes after school.  Failure to do so will result in a one game suspension. 

· It is Public Schools’ Week (March 8-13)!   Appreciate those who contribute to your education!

ü                  Thurs., Mar. 11th – Administration, Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day

·             Youth for Youth Live Guam is hosting a “Swim & Play Ukulele Night” at the Tarza Waterpark on Sat., Mar. 20th from 6-10pm.  Live performance by “Lean Not.”  Cost is $10 per person.  See Mr. Ballares or Chelsea Santos for tickets. 

·             This year’s Special Olympics will be held at Okkodo High School on Sat., Mar. 20th.  All Islanders are invited to come out and cheer.  If you would like to donate $2.00 for refreshments, see Mrs. Nelson in L103

·             The Japanese Culture Club is hosting an Arcade every Wednesday in L204 during lunch.  Games include:  Rockband, Wii, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), and Japanese Drama/Anime movie showings.  There is also a Japanese Manga library available.  Only 20 people are allowed.  First come, first served. 

·             Auditions for Senior Prom entertainment start Mar. 15th.  For scheduling, sign up with Joel Rosario or any Senior officer. 

·             The Class of 2010 is hosting a dinner fundraiser at King’s Restaurant in Harmon on Tues., Mar. 16th from 6-9pm.  Please show your Islander support and help out the Senior Class.  Flyers, that may be picked up in B202 or from any Senior officer, are needed upon purchasing your meal. 

·             Are you interested in pursuing a career in teaching or promoting education?  The Future Educators of America organization meets Thursday during lunch in J207.

ESKUELAN PUENGI

·                  Attention Faculty/Staff/Students:  Please be aware that the faculty/staff gate will be closed at 3:30 PM for the duration of the Eskuelan Puengi Program.  All traffic must enter/exit from the bus gate.   Additionally, all gates will be locked and secured by 4:30 PM.  Those needing access on campus after such time must make arrangements with the administration in advance.  As a reminder, for safety purposes all club/organization advisors must remain with their students until the last student is picked up. 

 

ATTENTION SENIORS: 

·             Pick up your cap and gown orders before Fri., Mar. 12th in the cafeteria during lunch.  No cap and gown distributions on class meeting days.  Also, if you would like to order your class ring and other senior memorabilia, the Jostens representative will be on campus on Mar. 18th and 19th.  No cap and gown orders will be taken. 

·             As part of our voted Senior Prom theme, “Making the Memories,” the Prom decoration committee is collecting appropriate pictures to decorate the ballroom.  Submit actual photographs to any senior officer, or place them in the boxes in the main office, J207, C102, B202, A103, or L102.  Last day for submissions is Apr. 21st

·             The Class is composing a slideshow of pictures from freshmen year through senior year.  This presentation will be played throughout the Prom.   If you want to include your pictures, send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. ·             Class song submissions are due Mar. 26th to any senior officer or at B202 or J207.  Or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Provide the song title, artist’s name, song lyrics, and a copy of the song on CD.  Restrictions:  no vulgarity, no sexual explicit material, no drug use, or any other illegal activity.

·             Charlie Corn Scholarship.  Major in Engineering or Architecture.  Deadline is Apr. 30, 2010. 

·             Businesswoman of the Year Scholarship – 3.0 GPA, financial need, activities, community service, and an essay.  Deadline is Jul. 31, 2010. 

 

PROGRAMS:  (See your counselor for details)

·             Accel Exchange College Grant.  Criteria – GPA, leadership, and financial need.  Deadline is Mar. 15, 2010.

·             U.S. Military Academy Summer Leaders Seminar.  Deadline is April 1, 2010.

·             Juniors:  Applications are available for the West Point Summer Leaders’ Seminar.  You must have a high grade point average and leadership ability.  Deadline is Apr. 1, 2010.

TUTORING (students must bring their books and other material):

·             The University of Guam’s AmeriCorps members are tutoring students in the following areas:  English, Math (Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics), organization skills (balancing schedules and classes), or help with homework.  Schedule is as follows in the Media Center:

Wednesday:                  8:00am – 2:30am                                                        Thursday:                8:00am – 2:30pm

·             National Honor Society members are tutoring students in the core subjects and foreign languages.  Schedule is as follows:

FOR TEACHERS: 

·             Interested in helping out with the JFK Chamoru Week Celebration scheduled for Apr. 5 – 9?  A planning meeting will be held this Fri., Mar. 5th in L102 during lunch.   

·             Mark your calendars:  this week Fri., Mar. 12th is Half-Day Instruction /Accreditation Day.  A copy of the revised bell schedule and department room listing is in your box. 

·             JFKHS Islander umbrella for sale for $15 each.  See Clarissa if interested. 

·             Do you want to learn tai chi?  Come to J101 for an hour of relaxing exercise on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:35 – 2:35pm.  Wear comfortable clothing and bring your own water.  Any questions, see Roberta Abaday. 

·             FDA/NSTA Professional Development Program in Food Science will be held July 18-25, 2010 in Washington, D.C.  Teachers in Science, Health, Home Economics, Agriculture, and related fields are encouraged to apply.  Note that mailed applications must be received in Washington, D.C. by Apr. 16th.  Mr. Church, or the Science department teachers, has the details.  Website is www.teachfoodscience.com.
